Portlands Theatre

In response to the impoverished state of theatre in Toronto, this project is a monument to congregation and storytelling. Its form is inspired by ziggurats, amphitheaters, and temples, but rendered in the distinctive Toronto brick that clads the city’s many reclaimed industrial arts facilities.

Working to redevelop derelict Pier 35, the three-venue performance and production complex sits on a generous parcel of public landscape. Courtyards host seasonal festivals while vast gardens offer respite from city life. Severed from the mainland, it is a terminus of a pilgrimage and a monumental gesture privileging the arts and culture.
